Yale University is Gothic, quaint, fascinating: A True Gem!

We started our summer explorations with the oldest university art museum in the western hemisphere, The Yale Art Gallery. It began with a donation of 100 paintings of the Revolutionary War, donated back in 1832. It now holds 185,000 pieces of some of the best fine arts, sculpture, and artifacts in the world. This is the source of the true Indiana Jones.

Artifacts from 2500 BC to Byzantine time, created in the ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece, and Rome are displayed here, and it’s all Free. African, Polynesian, Asian, Mayan & Olmec sculptures were jaw-dropping in room after room. Every famous painter is represented from Turner to Blake, and Degas to Calder. One room held sculptures and paintings of Gertrude Stein, along with her writings, surrounded by Picasso’s. Plus, it was Alumni Reunion week, so tables of beautiful pastries and refreshments greeted us at the door. The building interior has a Tuscan romanesque section built in 1928. The beauty hit the senses in every way possible!

Several hours later, we walked the neighborhood, reading menus of one top restaurant after another. Each had it’s own unique decor to go along with their ‘seeds to table’ philosophy. Kitchen ‘Zinc’ reminded us of a European bistro, offering a French Bordeaux and variety cheese plate with their own homemade nut breads and sauces. Pretty much perfect. Quaint boutiques caught our eye on the way back, where we couldn’t pass up some wonderful styles with flowery images of the Eiffel Tower. A Little Paris experience for us….unexpected and so welcome.
