I so love Greece

I so love Greece

IstanbulCreteAthens 432I’m so grateful we experienced this Ancient Beauty!

I can’t even begin to understand all that’s happening in this fabled land these days. My friend, originally from Athens, just posted that the ancient ruins of Palmyra are now laced with mines by terrorist fanatics. They seek to control the area. Inconceivable! When we self toured Istanbul, Crete, and Athens in 2011, we immersed ourselves in the thousands of ruins, the classical perfection of art and sculptures, and the warmth and welcome of the people, the cities, the land. What a gift to actually be in the presence of so many masterpieces that we had studied in our university art history classes. We could hardly believe it was happening.

The people couldn’t have been more accepting of us, as they’d try to talk to us in German, Swedish, and finally English. We dressed more European than American, I guess. The food was delicious, the beer cooling, and the outdoor taverna’s inviting. The skies seemed crystal clear, bluer than ever, highlighting the Colosseum, ancient libraries, baths, temples, observatories, shops, and mansions built thousands of years ago. The entrance to the museum, made of thick glass plates, revealed archaeological digs going on right in the moment, as layer after layer, mosaic floor after hearths, came to light. Since the 6th Century B.C., cities were built repeatedly over older cities. This truly was the hub of civilization, filled with thousands of years of lives, loves, art, and drama, unique in every way.

A part of me wants the world to come to the rescue, to save this incredible gem of the ages. I believe we are a global society, but where do you begin? Politics, economics, debts, fiscal reforms, the E.U. all have an opinion. I only know I will hold deeply in my heart the peaceful, loving, magical land that I experienced and remember as though it was yesterday. It felt like home.
