The Fascinating Creative Process

How do You Find Your Inspiration?

The Turquoise Cliffs above have been in my mind’s eye for a few days. They were so vivid, I thought I had painted them before. Searching through my ‘archives’ produced nothing. So I made some samples and then a video demo of the making of this painting for YouTube. Where did this idea come from? I have no idea, but it seemed to demand to be painted.

I’ve been reading Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlandish Companions” and she speaks of her characters talking to her. Her books are records of each character telling her what they would say, do, and think. It’s a fascinating process that touches deeply on an almost otherworldly connection. Her characters come alive through her writing process.

Musicians seem to hear the music long before they play it. It’s like the music of the spheres, something out there in the ethers, waiting to be caught on the wind by some human who can then manifest it into something earthly, solid, and strong. This might explain why so many ideas, inventions, and creations are so original and yet made by several artists or inventors at the same time.

When the inspiration hits, we must grab it and make it happen before another creative soul does. I recall reading Elizabeth Gilbert saying something along these lines. A woman she met and hugged, wrote an entire story that she, Elizabeth, had in mind, with many specific details, but that she had put off writing to do other projects. It’s as though her untold story mysteriously migrated to the other woman in the hug! It happens.

So listen for the inner voice. Gaze out your window and see what ideas flow in. Follow up thoughts with the resource library at your fingertips, your computer, and see where they lead. Mindfulness is an amazing process….don’t let it slip away. Say Yes to your ideas, open the door to synchronicity, and allow the adventure of a lifetime to engulf you in fairy dust! Bring in the Magic!
