Courage to Create: Doing, Repeating, Practicing

When I wanted to return back to painting after teaching jewelry here in Connecticut for 9 yrs, I wondered how to begin. It wasn’t in me to go back to the mixed media, structured oil pastels/gouache I did back in Chicago. I had changed and I knew my techniques had to change.

I took some online classes. One, TAO, teaching art online, threw me into the digital world. There I met a fellow student, Pauline Agnew, who wanted to teach the European technique of free painting with baby wipes, rollers, and fingers. Just what I needed. She’d paint, and her class would try it. As I worked, I thought I needed confidence to paint again, but found what I really needed was Courage. Never knowing how a thing would turn out, I immersed myself in the process. 

Courage to Create leads to confidence. I pushed myself even further, by recording videos of My Process, and posting on YouTube! That is my ‘Do Something Scary to Move Forward‘ belief.

Here’s the Key! With Art, as with anything worth doing, implementing the learning and repeating the process brings success! Doing something once doesn’t win the prize. To get to the gold, like a great athlete, musician, or actress, involves repetition. Trying it again and again. So risks are taken, Mistakes are made.

At first, we try to walk & fall down a lot. All in all, this is how we’ve learned everything in life. Yet, we keep experimenting with the concept, technique, or with new colors, tools, and ideas. Eventually, this will lead us to our style, voice, the ‘thing’ we love to do.

There’s definitely an Art Success Path and it involves Doing Art often, improving on a personal level, and growing in knowledge of techniques, Self, and tools. Where are you on the Artist Success Path?
